Read the heat

Every color is a temperature, and every temperature is a decision.

Cherry red at 815°C is the sweet spot — soft enough to move, cool enough to keep the carbon in the edge. White-hot at 1200°C means you've gone too far and the steel is burning.

Most people think forging is about hitting things. It's about knowing when to stop.

I lit my first forge in a rented garage with a borrowed anvil and a hairdryer for a bellows. The first thing I learned: steel will tell you everything, if you watch the color. The second thing: most beginners hit it too much.

A knife is maybe three hundred hammer blows and ten thousand hours of judgment in between. The blows are the easy part. The judgment — when the steel is hot enough, when it's done moving, when to set the hammer down — is the craft.

So that's what we built here. Not a gallery of finished blades, but the judgment in between. The heat colors, the quench line, the reason a two-pound hammer outworks a four-pound one. Everything the old hands know, written down before it's forgotten.

Questions, answered.

Do I need a real forge to start?+
No. You can start with a firebrick, a hairdryer, and a piece of rebar. The library is written for people at a kitchen table and people in a full shop.
What steel should I buy first?+
1075. It's forgiving, hardens easily, and won't crack if you overshoot the heat once or twice.
Why does tempering matter?+
A fully hardened blade is glass — hard but brittle. Tempering trades a little hardness for toughness so your edge flexes instead of chipping.
Is this only for bladesmiths?+
No. Blacksmithing is hooks, gates, tools, and sculpture too. Blades are just the sharp end of the craft.
How hot is 'cherry red'?+
About 815°C — hot enough that steel moves under the hammer and cool enough to keep the carbon in the edge. The heat-color scale on the homepage walks you through it.
Is it dangerous?+
It's fire and hot steel. Wear natural fibers, eye protection, and closed shoes, and keep a bucket of sand nearby. Respect the heat and it respects you back.
