Finishing

Grind, sharpen, handle — the last 20% is the craft.

The last 20%

Anyone can bang a rough shape out of hot steel. The difference between a tool and a wall-hanger is the grinding, the sharpening, and the handle — the part most smiths skip because it's slow and cold.

The finishing pass

grind establish the bevel, keep it cool
sharpen a stone beats a belt at the very edge
handle one good handle outlives three good blades
clean wire-brush, oil, and a wax finish

When it's done

You'll know. The steel takes a uniform polish, the edge bites a thumbnail, and the whole thing sits in your hand like it grew there. That's not luck. That's the craft.
